Position Play
Position is the most undervalued concept in amateur poker. Acting last provides information advantage that compounds across every street.
Vee's Rule: "From early position, play 8-10% of hands. From the button, play 25-30%. The same hand has different value based on position."
Pot Odds
Before calling any bet, calculate your pot odds and compare to your equity. If equity exceeds pot odds, call. If not, fold.
Example: Pot is $100, opponent bets $50. You need to call $50 to win $150. Pot odds: 3:1 (25%). You need 25%+ equity to call profitably.
Bankroll Management
Even winning players face variance. Proper bankroll management ensures you survive the swings.
- Cash games: 20-30 buy-ins minimum
- Tournaments: 100+ buy-ins
- Move down when bankroll drops 30%
Hand Reading
Think in ranges, not specific hands. Narrow your opponent's range on each street based on their actions.
Process: Start with villain's full range → Eliminate hands that don't fit their preflop action → Further narrow on flop, turn, river based on sizing and timing.

Villain checks, Hero bets $25, Villain raises to $70...
Analysis: "This is where amateur players get into trouble. We have top pair, top kicker. Feels strong. But let's think about villain's range here.
They called a 3-bet from the BB, then check-raised a K-high flop. What hands in their range do this? Sets (99, 44), two pair (K9 suited), and some bluffs. AK? They likely 4-bet preflop. KQ, KJ? Usually just calls the flop.
Against this range, TPTK is approximately 35% equity. We're getting 2.3:1 on a call (need 30%), so a call is marginally profitable. But we have two streets left and will face more pressure. The disciplined play is to call flop, and reassess turn."
